Dr. Doran Gresham

Senior Consultant | Special Education & Inclusive Instruction

Dr. Gresham brings clarity, humanity, and practical structure to some of the most complex challenges facing schools today—special education, equity, engagement, and access. As a Senior Consultant with SPN, he works alongside district and school leaders to design learning environments where all students are challenged, supported, and meaningfully included.

He also serves as Assistant Professor of Special Education and Disability Studies at The George Washington University, where his research focuses on reducing the overrepresentation of students of color in restrictive special education settings and supporting more equitable instructional and behavioral practices. His work bridges research and practice, helping educators move from insight to action.

Dr. Gresham’s career spans classroom teaching, school leadership, mentoring, and coaching, including prior roles as a Master Educator and Senior Master Educator with D.C. Public Schools, where he supported and evaluated instructional practice at scale.

Outside of work, he’s a longtime husband, dance dad, and firm believer in staying grounded—both at home and in schools.

Increasing student engagement through structured academic discourse

Designing systems that support both teachers and students

CREATE & VAKT:

A Practical Framework for Student Engagement, Led by Dr. Doran Gresham

How CREATE works in schools

CREATE is a whole-school framework grounded in decades of work in special education, teacher preparation, and school-based coaching. It helps schools increase engagement, improve instruction, strengthen climate, and reduce dropout risk by aligning systems and adult practice around student needs.

Community

Educators begin with community mapping—studying local opportunities, partners, and realities to connect learning to real life, 21st-century skills, and meaningful student engagement.

Reading

CREATE builds instructional assistants’ capacity to deliver consistent, confident reading support, expanding access to instruction and reducing student frustration and disengagement.

Efficacy

Schools focus on collective teacher efficacy by using shared strategies, language, and follow-through so adults move students forward together.

Active Management Systems

Schools shift from reactive, punitive responses to proactive, positive behavior systems, improving climate and increasing time on task.

Transition

Transition planning becomes practical and future-focused, helping students connect school to life after graduation.

Engaging Families

Family partnerships are strengthened through VABBing—Validate, Affirm, Build, Bridge—providing staff a consistent, trust-building communication approach.

Where VAKT Fits In

VAKT

VAKT (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, Tactile) brings CREATE to life in the classroom. It emphasizes active, engaging instruction that moves beyond worksheets and compliance to thinking, creativity, and student ownership.

CREATE

CREATE provides the structure. VAKT delivers the engagement. Together, they support a schoolwide approach that strengthens relationships, improves instruction, and keeps students connected to school.

The result:

Classrooms where students explain, question, and think together, and teachers report higher engagement across ability levels.
