Using AI to Develop Future-Focused Lesson Plans

AI can have a profound impact on classroom instruction. It has the capability to take all students in a classroom to the Knowledge-level, which frees up time for the teacher to focus on Application and Synthesis. For example, students that are struggling with a literary passage can be assisted by AI to understand it better by breaking it down into digestible pieces of language at their reading level (Lexile). On the other hand, AI can help young readers read and understand complex literature such as Plato through a similar process.

SPN Coaches can work with instructional leaders and teacher become comfortable with AI to the point that they are able to use it to develop high-quality Future Focused lessons that incorporate the skills, knowledge, and dispositions that students and graduates will need for success in today’s workplace and society.

Working collaboratively with school/district leadership, SPN will develop a unique onsite visit that allows SPN Coaches and school/district leaders to utilize SPN proprietary tools, resources, and rubrics to conduct visitations to classrooms, school activities and functions to collect evidence and artifacts of Future-Focused Skill Development. These are not traditional visitations focused on whether the curriculum is being taught and assessed in the classroom; rather these are Future Focused visitation that examine the intricacies of interaction between teacher and student and between student and student.

During the visits, SPN’s team members will help school/district leadership use our tools and resources to determine if students are demonstrating Future-Focused Skills in instructional settings.

Following the visit, SPN’s team members will facilitate a short debriefing with district/school leaders on what they saw in these interactions and evidence collected to substantiate their findings. These targeted discussions will help district and school leaders:

  • Learn from one another and calibrate their use of SPN tools, resources and rubrics
  • Shift their mindset from content and curriculum to instruction and interactions taking place between teacher/student and student/student.
  • Ask clarifying questions and to request additional information or data on the use of AI in current best practices and strategies to measure the development of Future-Focused skills in students.
